Bulk pack of 10 chemical refill packs for type HK mercury spillage kits. Contains both microfine sulphur and calcium hydroxide for use as the absorbent powder mix and in decontamination slurry. Will extend the shelf life of the kit for another 3-4 years after expiry. Intended for multiple users such as in the hospital or industrial setting.
How does it work ?
Mercury's toxicity arises from the fact that it binds avidly with sulphur-containing groups (thiol groups) in proteins. By adding a paste mixture of microfine sulphur and calcium hydroxide (which increases the surface area of absorbent) to a mercury spillage, the mercury binds with the sulphur in the paste, forming a pseudo-amalgam. This can then be lifted from the contaminated surface and disposed of.
