Passive Mercury Dosimeter
What is it ?
Passive dosimetry is a personal monitoring technique which uses air flow to capture mercury vapour in the filter capsule over a period of time. The badge is then returned and the capsule is analysed for mercury. When adjusted for the exposure time, the average air concentration of mercury can then be calculated, showing if the worker has been at risk of mercury exposure.
Who uses these ?
Passive dosimetry for mercury exposure is a standard method in the oil and gas sector, where mercury contamination of natural gas causes gradual weakening of the metal structrues in the plant which have to be examined and replaced from time to time. Passive dosimetry is also used as an alternative to urine monitoring in many other industries such as recycling plants, chemical industries, medical and dental facilities. The analytical method has been validated against standards set down by UKAS, US NIOSH and OSHA and other Health and Safety bodies globally. Rig and refinery managers routinely issue these to maintenance workers who may be exposed to mercury vapour and liquid mercury in the plant.
What's the process for using these ?
The dosimeter is supplied to you in a sealed bag. The worker wears the badge while at work, recording the number of hours of exposure. The dosimeter is mailed back to us and the absorbent capsule is analysed for mercury content. By adjusting for the exposure time, the average air concentration of mercury can be calculated and reported back, with a clear indication of the level of exposure.
